Coco Gauff Cruises Past Iva Jovic to Reach US Open Quarter-Finals

Coco Gauff produced a composed performance to defeat fellow American teenager Iva Jovic 6-1, 6-4 and reach the US Open quarter-finals.

The fourth-seeded Gauff showed the benefit of her growing Grand Slam experience as she overcame 18-year-old Jovic in straight sets at Flushing Meadows. The victory sent Gauff into the quarter-finals for the first time since her 2023 US Open title run.

The match began with both players putting pressure on each other's serve. After trading early breaks, Gauff quickly established control, using her consistency and athleticism from the baseline to force Jovic into difficult positions.

Gauff then broke again to move 3-1 ahead and dominated the closing stages of the opening set. She won 13 of the final 15 points to take the first set 6-1 in just 33 minutes.

Jovic responded strongly in the second set and demonstrated why she is regarded as one of American tennis's most promising young players. The teenager saved four break points during one game and began producing more aggressive winners, making the contest considerably tighter.

However, Gauff eventually created another opportunity and broke for a 3-2 advantage. Jovic immediately recovered the break, but Gauff's movement, defensive skills and experience allowed her to regain control and close out the match 6-4.

The win extended Gauff's winning streak to 10 matches and set up a quarter-final meeting with French Open champion Mirra Andreeva. Gauff is also still in contention for the world No. 1 ranking, depending on how the tournament unfolds.

The quarter-final line-up underlines the depth of the women's tournament, with several Grand Slam champions and Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen still competing. Elena Rybakina also advanced to the last eight after defeating two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka 6-1, 6-4.
