Coco Gauff Claims First French Open Title After Thrilling Win Over Aryna Sabalenka

Posted : 07 June 2025

Coco Gauff secured her first French Open singles title by staging a remarkable comeback to defeat world number one Aryna Sabalenka in a gripping final. The American, seeded second, overcame a tough start to win 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4 in challenging conditions that saw both players struggle with their serves. This victory marks Gauff’s second Grand Slam singles trophy, following her breakthrough US Open win in 2023, where she also bested Sabalenka in the final.

Gauff’s resilience was on full display as she battled back from a double break deficit in the opening set, gradually finding her rhythm and capitalizing on numerous errors from Sabalenka. The match featured a flurry of breaks — 12 in the first two sets alone — disrupted by gusty winds that made serving difficult. Despite the chaotic nature of the contest, Gauff held her nerve in the final set to secure the championship, clinching victory after saving a crucial break point.

For Sabalenka, who was aiming for her first Roland Garros title, the loss was painful. The Belarusian, known for her consistency across all surfaces, had appeared strong early on, even reaching a 5-1 lead in the opening set’s tie-break. However, unforced errors and frustration crept in, culminating in 70 unforced mistakes that undermined her chances. After the match, she expressed regret over her performance but graciously acknowledged Gauff’s superior play on the day.

This triumph represents a major personal milestone for Gauff, who three years ago experienced heartbreak at the same tournament as a teenager, overwhelmed by dark thoughts after losing to Iga Swiatek.

Since then, she has matured both mentally and technically, using a successful clay-court season—including finals appearances in Madrid and Rome—to arrive in Paris with renewed confidence. Her victory confirms her status as a rising force in women’s tennis and the first American to win Roland Garros since Serena Williams in 2015.

Despite the difficult conditions that hindered top-level play, both finalists displayed immense determination. Gauff’s emotional celebration with her family contrasted with Sabalenka’s visible disappointment, highlighting the intensity and pressure of Grand Slam finals. While Sabalenka continues to chase her maiden clay-court major, Gauff’s win marks the fulfillment of her promise and a thrilling chapter in her young career.
