Coco Gauff Battles Into French Open Semifinals Despite Error-Filled Clash

Posted : 04 June 2025

Coco Gauff fought her way into the French Open semifinals on Wednesday, overcoming fellow American Madison Keys in a hard-fought, error-strewn encounter. The final scoreline read 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-1, but the match was far from a display of flawless tennis, as both players combined to commit over 100 unforced errors. Despite the sloppy play, Gauff showed resilience, capitalizing on Keys’ mistakes to edge through a testing three-setter.

Much of Gauff’s success came from the numerous errors Keys made, including 10 double faults by the Australian Open champion. The 21-year-old Gauff acknowledged the challenges she faced, especially given Keys’ powerful and fast shots, but stressed her determination to fight for every point and adapt her strategy mid-match. Looking ahead, Gauff will have to raise her level significantly to face France’s Lois Boisson or Russia’s Mirra Andreeva in the semifinals.

Keys, who was hoping to reach the last four at Roland Garros for the second time since 2018, was unable to find consistency, finishing the match with 60 unforced errors. The American left the court disappointed but congratulated her opponent on a tough battle.

Meanwhile, Gauff, who reached the final at Roland Garros in 2022, continues to build her impressive record as the youngest woman since Martina Hingis to claim 25 main-draw wins at this Grand Slam.

The opening set was a rollercoaster, with multiple breaks of serve and momentum swinging wildly between the two. Keys narrowly won the tiebreak to take the first set, but Gauff steadied herself in the second set and dominated the third, pulling away to seal the victory. Despite the messy nature of the match, Gauff’s persistence and improved play down the stretch earned her a spot in Sunday’s final four.
