World number two Coco Gauff continued her strong run at the French Open by securing another straight-sets victory, advancing to the quarter-finals with a commanding 6-0, 7-5 win over Russian 20th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova. Gauff, who is 21 years old, dominated the opening set in just 29 minutes, losing only five points in the first five games. This marks the fifth year in a row that the 2022 runner-up has reached the Roland Garros quarter-finals, demonstrating consistent performance on the clay courts of Paris.
Gauff’s next challenge will come from the winner of the all-American clash between Australian Open champion Madison Keys and Hailey Baptiste. Despite a strong start, Gauff faced significant resistance in the second set, especially during a lengthy sixth game where she saved five break points before finally closing out the set. Although Alexandrova fought back to level the score at 4-4, Gauff finished the match on a high, winning three consecutive games to seal her victory. This marks Gauff’s fourth consecutive straight-set win in the tournament, and she has become the youngest woman since Venus Williams in 2001 to reach five quarter-finals at a single Grand Slam event.
Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva also secured her place in the quarter-finals with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Australian 17th seed Daria Kasatkina. The 18-year-old sixth seed is the youngest player to reach consecutive women’s singles quarter-finals at Roland Garros since Martina Hingis in 1998. Andreeva battled through a tough match, claiming a tight first set by breaking Kasatkina’s serve in the eighth game. Despite trailing 5-3 in the second set, Andreeva made an impressive comeback, winning four straight games to close out the victory and advance further in the tournament.
Andreeva revealed that facing Kasatkina is especially challenging, both on and off the court, as they often practice together. She admitted to not enjoying playing against Kasatkina, calling their matches “torture” due to their intense rivalry. Reflecting on the match, Andreeva expressed happiness with her win, highlighting the significance of the hard-fought battle. Her progress continues to turn heads as she follows up on last year’s French Open semi-final appearance, proving herself as one of the rising stars on the women’s tour.
