Coco Gauff advanced to the third round of the French Open after defeating 18-year-old Tereza Valentova in straight sets. The American second seed delivered a strong performance, winning 6-2 6-4, as she continued her pursuit of a second Grand Slam singles title. Gauff, who reached the final at Roland Garros in 2022, has shown excellent recent form, winning 12 of her last 14 matches, including reaching clay-court finals in Madrid and Rome.
Despite her overall dominance, Gauff faced a test in the second set as both players exchanged multiple service breaks. The 21-year-old eventually held serve for a 5-4 lead and broke Valentova in the next game to close out the match. Her victory sets up a third-round clash against fellow Czech player Marie Bouzkova. Gauff is aiming to add to her Grand Slam success after capturing her first major singles title at the 2023 US Open and winning the French Open doubles title alongside Katerina Siniakova.
Elsewhere, fellow American Jessica Pegula also reached the third round with a 6-3 7-6 (7-3) win over Ann Li. Pegula, the tournament’s third seed, has embraced a low-profile approach in Paris, enjoying quiet Metro rides to Roland Garros. Comparing it to her experiences in New York, Pegula appreciated the peacefulness and ease of travel in the French capital, even joking about the anonymity she enjoyed during her daily commutes.
The tournament’s fifth day also saw a mix of triumphs and upsets. Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva progressed with a solid 6-3 6-4 win over Ashlyn Krueger, while former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova advanced by defeating Magdalena Frech in three sets. However, there was disappointment for defending Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova, who was eliminated in just 74 minutes by Veronika Kudermetova, suffering a surprising 6-0 6-3 defeat.
