Coco Gauff advances to Auckland Classic final

Posted : 06 January 2024

Coco Gauff's strong performance in the lead-up to the Australian Open continued as she secured a spot in the Auckland Classic final. The US Open champion, currently ranked third in the world, defeated fellow American Emma Navarro with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 victory in the semi-finals. Gauff, who is defending her Auckland title from 2023, will face Ukraine's Elina Svitolina in the final.

Throughout the tournament in New Zealand, Gauff has displayed remarkable form, not dropping a set. Her performance suggests a promising start to 2024 and raises expectations for her Australian Open campaign, where she has yet to advance beyond the fourth round. Reflecting on her semi-final win, Gauff emphasized her aggressive approach in serving and returning, acknowledging Navarro's skills and expressing satisfaction with her performance.

In another event, British player Harriet Dart faced a defeat in the Canberra International final against Spain's Nuria Parrizas Diaz. Dart, 27, will now participate in the Australian Open qualifying rounds starting on Monday. Meanwhile, at the Brisbane International, Heather Watson missed a chance for her sixth WTA doubles title as she and partner Greet Minnen were defeated. However, in men's doubles, Lloyd Glasspool and Jean-Julien Rojer reached the final.

At the Brisbane men's singles, Denmark's Holger Rune secured a final spot against Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov after overcoming a tough challenge from unseeded Roman Safiullin. Dimitrov advanced by defeating Jordan Thompson. In the women's draw, world number four Elena Rybakina set up a final clash with world number two Aryna Sabalenka. Sabalenka won her semi-final against Victoria Azarenka, setting the stage for a highly anticipated match against Rybakina, a rematch of the 2023 Australian Open final.
