Coco Gauff experienced an unusual start to her French Open campaign when she walked onto Court Philippe-Chatrier without her tennis racquets. The No. 2 seed quickly realized the oversight as she unzipped her bag and informed the chair umpire that her racquets were still in the locker room.
A ball boy soon retrieved them, and the 20-year-old American went on to comfortably defeat Australia’s Olivia Gadecki 6-2, 6-2 in just over an hour.
After the match, Gauff lightheartedly placed the blame on her coach, explaining that he usually packs her racquets due to his superstitious nature. She added that the unexpected mishap actually helped ease her nerves ahead of the opening round.
The incident turned into a moment of levity, which Gauff believes helped her relax and play with more composure during the match. She admitted that forgetting the racquets may have ironically been a blessing in disguise.
Looking ahead, Gauff will face Czech qualifier Tereza Valentova in the second round. Reflecting on her match and the windy conditions, Gauff noted that each side of the court presented different challenges. Despite committing seven double faults, she expressed satisfaction with her performance.
The American is aiming for a strong run in Paris after falling short in the finals of both Madrid and Rome, and she remains a top contender, having previously reached the French Open final in 2022 and claimed her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2023.
