Cerúndolo, Rinderknech Advance as BMW Open 2026 Begins in Munich

The 2026 BMW Open got underway on Monday in Munich, launching another key stop on the ATP Tour’s clay-court swing. Early main-draw matches and final qualifying rounds highlighted a busy opening day at the MTTC Iphitos complex, with several players making strong starts to their campaigns.

Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo delivered one of the standout performances of the day, easing past Sumit Nagal in straight sets to secure his place in the next round. The fifth seed showed control throughout, underlining his credentials as one of the contenders on clay this week.

Seventh seed Arthur Rinderknech also advanced comfortably, defeating Alex Michelsen in straight sets. Meanwhile, Gabriel Diallo impressed with a dominant win to move into the next round, and Botic van de Zandschulp came through a tighter encounter to progress.

One of the day’s notable results saw Ben Shelton suffer an early exit, falling in three sets to Emilio Nava. The upset added early intrigue to the draw, with the second seed unable to build momentum in Munich.

Off the court, the tournament also saw disruption before play began, as German veteran Jan-Lennard Struff withdrew due to illness. His absence opened the door for lucky loser Sumit Nagal to enter the main draw, reshaping part of the opening-round lineup.

The BMW Open, an ATP 500 event played on outdoor clay, features a strong field led by defending champion Alexander Zverev, who is set to begin his title defense later in the week. With top seeds yet to enter the action, Day 1 provided an early glimpse of the competition and potential surprises that could define the tournament.

As the first round continues, attention now turns to the arrival of higher-ranked players and whether more upsets will follow in Munich’s opening stages.
