CBN Tennis Open 2025: Canice Abua Advances to Round of 32 After Impressive Win

Posted : 22 July 2025

Top tennis player Canice Abua was off to a fine start as he defeated Charles Olom 4-1, 4-2 in the Men’s Singles Round of 64 to qualify for the Round of 32 in the ongoing 2025 CBN Senior Tennis Open Championship in Abuja.

The ongoing championship, which started on July 18, is scheduled to end on July 26 at the National Tennis Centre, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Package B, Abuja.

Abua, who took control of the match from the onset, won the first set 4-1 and maintained his momentum in the second set to clinch it 4-2.

He will next face either Seyi Ogunsakin or Yahuza Bello in the Round of 32.

Speaking after the rain-delayed match, Abua expressed his delight at progressing to the next stage.

“My opponent was tough, but I managed to dominate the game, playing him from left to right. It felt more like a training session or warm-up than a competitive match.
I’m excited about the doubles event starting today, where I’ll partner with Emmanuel Michael, and we’re hopeful of lifting the trophy,” he said.

On his part, Charles Olom, who hails from Cross River, said that although he lost, he gave his all in the short-set format of the first round.

“My opponent is a skilled player, and I learned a lot from him. It was our first time facing each other in a competition.

This is my first time making the main draw in the CBN Open, and I’m taking it as a valuable experience. I’ll now focus on the doubles event with my partner, Agunbiade Oluwadamilola. We’ll give it our best shot and strive for a better result,” he said.

In other Men’s Singles matches:

  • Adeleye, Nigeria’s current number one player, dominated Mohammed Amir 4-1, 4-1.
