Casper Ruud Channeling Andre Agassi for Ultimate Jannik Sinner Final Showdown in Rome

Posted : 17 May 2026

Norwegian tennis star Casper Ruud is using words of wisdom from legend Andre Agassi ahead of his Italian Open final match against world number one Jannik Sinner on Sunday. Ruud reached the championship finale after easily defeating a physically exhausted Luciano Darderi 6-1, 6-1 in their semifinal encounter. The rapid victory gave the 27-year-old valuable rest ahead of the title decider at the Foro Italico.

Conversely, his Italian opponent had to endure a far more grueling path to the final. Sinner defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in a physically taxing match that was delayed over two days by heavy Rome downpours. The hard-fought victory extended Sinner's incredible winning streak at the Masters 1000 level to 33 matches. The local hero is now aiming to become only the second male player in tennis history to secure a Career Golden Masters.

Although Ruud will enter the championship match fresher, he remains mindful of his poor historical record against the top seed. Sinner has emerged victorious in all four of their previous career meetings on the professional tour. Their most recent clash at this exact tournament last year ended in a brutal 6-0, 6-1 quarterfinal defeat for the Norwegian.

Ruud discussed the immense challenge of facing the home favorite during an interview on Tennis Channel. He referenced Agassi's famous advice regarding long winning streaks: noting that a dominant player inevitably edges closer to an unexpected defeat with every single victory. The former world number two expressed hope that Sunday would finally be the day he breaks his winless streak against the Italian icon.

The three-time Grand Slam finalist acknowledged that standard tactical adjustments will not suffice against an opponent in such blistering form. Ruud stated that he must elevate his performance multiple times over to stay competitive during extended baseline rallies. He remains fully aware that lifting his first Rome Masters crown requires delivering his absolute best performance of the season.
