Casper Ruud secured the most significant title of his career last year by defeating Jack Draper in a thrilling Madrid Open final. The Norwegian 14th seed overcame the rising British star with a 7-5 3-6 6-4 victory at the Manolo Santana Centre Court. This triumph marked Ruud's first ATP Masters 1000 crown after previously reaching three Grand Slam finals.
The match was a tightly contested battle that lasted nearly two and a half hours. Ruud showcased his superior clay-court experience in the final set to deny Draper a second Masters title of the 2025 season. Despite the competitive nature of the clash, Ruud remained humble during his post-match celebrations.
During a television interview immediately following the trophy presentation, Ruud addressed the British fans and pundits. He stated that he felt sorry for "spoiling the British party" after Draper’s impressive run to the final. Ruud noted that he had to bring his "A+ game" because the young Briton had been "wiping everyone on the floor" throughout the tournament.
Ruud further praised Draper’s versatility, noting that the Sutton native had become a genuine threat on any surface. While Draper was previously known for his success on hard courts and grass, his performance in Madrid proved his growing competence on clay. Ruud emphasized that there are now "no holes" in the Brit’s game.
Draper started the match strongly by breaking Ruud early in the opening set, but the Norwegian fought back from a 5-3 deficit to take the lead. Although Draper leveled the match in the second set, Ruud found a crucial break in the fifth game of the decider. The result was a significant blow to Draper, who has since struggled with a knee injury.
In the current 2026 season, Draper was unfortunately forced to withdraw from the Madrid Open and the upcoming French Open. He sustained a knee tendon injury during a match in Barcelona earlier this April. This setback is expected to cause a significant drop in his world ranking as he misses out on defending his finalist points.
