Carlos Alcaraz Wins Japan Open for First Title Since Injury Comeback

Posted : 07 October 2026

Carlos Alcaraz returned to the winner’s circle by successfully defending his Japan Open title, defeating Czech Republic player Jiri Lehecka 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 in Tuesday’s final in Tokyo. The victory gave the Spaniard his first tournament title since winning in Doha in February and marked his 27th career trophy.

The world No. 3 was competing in only his second singles event since returning from a lengthy absence caused by a wrist injury. After reaching the US Open quarterfinals in his comeback tournament, Alcaraz followed that performance with a title in Tokyo, despite admitting he was still some way from his best level.

Lehecka made the stronger start in the final, breaking Alcaraz in the opening game and putting the defending champion under immediate pressure. Alcaraz responded by recovering the break and eventually edged a tight first set in the tiebreak before finding another breakthrough midway through the second set to secure the victory.

Alcaraz said he had entered the tournament without knowing how quickly he would regain his competitive form after his injury. He added that he was focused on taking each tournament as it came rather than assuming another title would arrive so soon after his return.

The triumph is Alcaraz’s third title of the season, following his Australian Open and Qatar Open victories, and makes him the first man since Pete Sampras in 1993-94 to win the Tokyo tournament in consecutive years.

Alcaraz will now turn his attention to the Shanghai Masters, where he is scheduled to continue his return to the top level. He said the Tokyo success was particularly meaningful because of everything he had endured during his recovery.
