Carlos Alcaraz Wins Italian Open, Sets Sights on Roland Garros Title Defense

Posted : 19 May 2025

Carlos Alcaraz clinched the Italian Open title on Sunday, defeating Jannik Sinner 7-6 (7/5), 6-1 in the final, sending a strong message ahead of the French Open. With this win, Alcaraz secures his third title of the season and will rise to world No. 2 behind Sinner when the new rankings are released. The victory marks his fourth final appearance this year and reinforces his status as a top contender to defend his Roland Garros crown.

Despite topping the world rankings, Sinner saw his impressive 26-match winning streak snapped by Alcaraz, who has been the only player to defeat the Italian in a tour final this year. Sinner had been on a meteoric rise with three Grand Slam wins, but Alcaraz’s win in Rome marks a significant moment in their ongoing rivalry.

The 22-year-old Spaniard has showcased remarkable form on clay, overcoming a thigh injury that sidelined him from the Madrid Open, and now boasts two Masters 1000 titles this year, including victories in Monte Carlo and Rome.

For Sinner, finishing runner-up at the Italian Open remains a positive step, especially as it was his first tournament back after a three-month suspension for accidental doping involving clostebol contamination.

His strong performance hints at a possible rematch against Alcaraz at Roland Garros, where the two will be the top seeds and among the brightest young stars in men’s tennis. Sinner had aimed to become the first Italian man to win the tournament since Adriano Panatta in 1976 but fell short in his quest.

On the women’s side, Jasmine Paolini made history by becoming the first player since Monica Seles in 1990 to win both the Rome singles and doubles titles. Alongside Sara Errani, Paolini defeated Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens 6-4, 7-5 to claim the doubles crown. Paolini’s singles victory came just a day after she overcame former US Open champion Coco Gauff, marking her as the first Italian woman to win the Rome singles title since Raffaella Reggi in 1985.
