World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz is on course to make his long-awaited return to competitive tennis at next month's Cincinnati Open after being included in the tournament's official entry list. If the Spaniard takes to the court, it will mark his first appearance since suffering a wrist injury during his opening-round match at the Barcelona Open in April.
The injury forced Alcaraz to miss several major events on the ATP calendar. He withdrew from the Madrid Open and Italian Open before also pulling out of the French Open, where he had entered as the two-time defending champion. His absence continued through Wimbledon, ending a lengthy spell on the sidelines as he focused on recovery.
During Alcaraz's absence, the ATP Tour saw significant changes at the top of the rankings. Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Wimbledon crown for a second consecutive year by defeating Alexander Zverev in the final, while Zverev had earlier captured the French Open title in Paris and climbed to world No. 2 ahead of the injured Spaniard.
A return in Cincinnati would provide Alcaraz with valuable match practice before he begins the defence of his US Open title later in August. The ATP Masters 1000 event is widely regarded as one of the final major preparation tournaments before Flushing Meadows, making it an ideal opportunity for the Spaniard to regain rhythm and assess his fitness against elite competition.
Although his name appears on the entry list, Alcaraz's participation will ultimately depend on his continued recovery and medical clearance. His inclusion, however, is an encouraging sign that one of the sport's biggest stars could soon be back in action after an extended injury absence.
