Carlos Alcaraz Reaches Paris Masters Quarter-Finals After Berrettini Withdraws

Posted : 06 November 2026

Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the Paris Masters quarter-finals on Thursday without having to play his scheduled last-16 match after Matteo Berrettini withdrew with an elbow injury.

The Spaniard was due to face the Italian, but Berrettini announced his withdrawal shortly before the contest, explaining that persistent pain in his arm had made it impossible for him to compete.

Alcaraz, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, had already received a first-round bye as one of the tournament's top eight seeds. His only appearance in Paris so far was a straight-sets victory over Alex Michelsen, meaning he reached the last eight with just one match played.

The world number one remaining in the draw will face American Taylor Fritz on Friday for a place in the semi-finals. Fritz booked his quarter-final spot by defeating France's sixth seed Arthur Fils 6-3, 6-4, keeping his hopes of qualifying for the ATP Finals alive.

Alcaraz is still chasing his first Paris Masters title. He is now the highest-ranked player left in the competition following the exit of world number one Alexander Zverev, who was beaten on Wednesday.

Ben Shelton also secured his place in the quarter-finals after edging Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in a deciding-set tie-break. The third seed recovered from dropping the second set to win 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), avoiding another upset in a tournament that has already seen several leading players eliminated.

Shelton will meet fellow American Tommy Paul in the next round. Paul reached the last eight with a 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 victory over France's Quentin Halys. Looking ahead to the match, Shelton praised his upcoming opponent, describing him as a strong player and a good friend.

Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata continued his impressive campaign by defeating Tomas Martin Etcheverry 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. The victory followed his notable second-round win over 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.

France's Luca Van Assche also advanced, beating Lorenzo Musetti in a lengthy three-set encounter. Musetti had made headlines by knocking out Alexander Zverev, but was unable to build on that victory and reach his first Masters 1000 title run.

Former world number two Casper Ruud completed the day's action with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff.
