Carlos Alcaraz says he feels mentally refreshed for the Shanghai Masters after winning the Japan Open following his return from injury.
Carlos Alcaraz heads into the Shanghai Masters with renewed confidence after ending his recent title drought at the Japan Open. The Spaniard defeated Jiri Lehecka 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in Tokyo to claim his first trophy since returning from a wrist injury.
The 23-year-old spent several months sidelined after suffering the injury in April, eventually making his comeback at the US Open in August. While he acknowledged that his body is still adapting to the demands of competitive matches, Alcaraz said he feels physically healthy and mentally refreshed.
Alcaraz has yet to progress beyond the quarter-finals at the Shanghai Masters and missed the tournament last year because of fitness concerns. Despite those previous difficulties, he believes he is prepared to challenge for a deep run this time.
The Spaniard has also been critical of the demanding tennis calendar, particularly the Asian swing that follows the US Open. However, he said he is determined to embrace the challenge in Shanghai and use his recent success in Tokyo as additional motivation.
Alcaraz received a first-round bye and will begin his Shanghai campaign against either Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo or Colombian qualifier Nicolas Mejia.
His chances of making a strong run have received a boost following Jannik Sinner’s withdrawal from the tournament because of a knee injury. Sinner, the world No. 1, has ended his 2026 season after being sidelined since Wimbledon.
Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic remain among the leading contenders in the draw. Djokovic arrives in Shanghai after winning his 102nd career title in Beijing, while Alcaraz will look to build on his Japan Open triumph as the season enters its final stretch.
