World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz endured intense pressure before rallying past American Taylor Fritz 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-3 in a gripping round-robin encounter at the ATP Finals on Tuesday. The win keeps the Spaniard undefeated, with two victories from two matches in the Jimmy Connors Group.
Fritz, last year’s finalist, delivered a remarkable performance, producing one of the best matches of the season-ending championships so far. The American took the opening set in a tiebreak, leaving Alcaraz under considerable pressure. Despite facing multiple break points in the second set, Alcaraz fought back to level the match.
As the contest progressed, Fritz began to show signs of fatigue, allowing Alcaraz to seize control. The Spaniard broke Fritz to lead 4-2 in the deciding set and eventually closed out the match in two hours and 48 minutes by serving out to love.
Both players had won their first matches of the tournament, setting up a thrilling group stage showdown. With this victory, Alcaraz is positioned strongly for a semifinal berth, which will be confirmed if Alex de Minaur defeats Lorenzo Musetti in the evening match.
