Carlos Alcaraz Wins Tough Opener Against Adam Walton at Australian Open

Posted : 18 January 2026

Carlos Alcaraz launched his pursuit of a career Grand Slam with a hard-fought straight-sets victory over Australia’s Adam Walton at the Australian Open on Sunday.

The Spanish star won 6-3, 7-6 (7/2), 6-2 on Rod Laver Arena, hitting eight aces and 38 winners to secure his place in the second round, where he will face Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann.

Despite the win, Alcaraz committed 36 unforced errors, more than his 81st-ranked opponent, highlighting a battle that was far from straightforward.

The 22-year-old already boasts six major titles, yet Melbourne Park has remained a stumbling block in his career. In his four previous appearances in Australia, he has never advanced past the quarterfinals, falling to Novak Djokovic last year and Alexander Zverev the year before.

A breakthrough in Melbourne would allow Alcaraz to become the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam, surpassing fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who achieved the feat by 24. It would also make him the youngest man in the Open era to win seven Grand Slam titles since Bjorn Borg at 23.

Walton, ranked 81st, tested the top seed thoroughly. The Australian worked multiple break points and even led 3-1 in the second set, challenging Alcaraz’s composure.

However, the reigning French Open and US Open champion dug deep, showing his speed, court coverage, and tactical acumen. After edging Walton in the second-set tiebreak, Alcaraz carried the momentum into the third set, breaking for a 4-2 lead before closing out the match comfortably.

With this victory, Alcaraz continues his quest for Australian Open success, aiming to fill the only gap in an already stellar career.
