Cameron Norrie Jacob Fearnley at French Open

Posted : 01 June 2025

Cameron Norrie kept his composure to defeat fellow Brit Jacob Fearnley in a third-round French Open match, despite constant disruptions from loud fireworks outside Paris Saint-Germain’s stadium.

The noise came as PSG fans prepared for their Champions League final against Inter Milan, making conditions challenging throughout the match. Norrie, ranked 81st, showcased his experience to overcome the younger Fearnley, who had recently overtaken him as Britain’s number two player.

Norrie’s steady performance helped him secure a 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 victory, marking his first time reaching the last 16 at Roland Garros. Fearnley, a French Open debutant ranked 55th, struggled under the pressure and appeared to sustain an injury during the second set.

Despite the distractions of fireworks, car horns, and sirens echoing from nearby, Norrie maintained focus and closed out the match, with Fearnley ultimately double-faulting on match point.

The players shared a respectful embrace after the grueling three-hour contest played under unusual conditions. As the noise lessened near the match’s end with the football game about to start, Norrie took control and advanced.

Reflecting on the tough battle, Norrie praised Fearnley’s breakthrough season and expressed relief at navigating such a difficult match amid the distractions. His next opponent could be former world number one Novak Djokovic.
