The opening day of the 2026 Mutua Madrid Open delivered a blend of dominant wins, rising talent breakthroughs, and a major setback for Spanish hopes as the women’s draw got underway on the clay courts of Madrid.
Spanish wildcard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro produced one of the standout performances of the day, dismantling Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-2, 6-0. Playing with confidence and aggression in front of the home crowd, Bouzas dictated rallies from the baseline and never allowed Haddad Maia to settle into any rhythm, securing a statement win and one of the biggest upsets of the opening round.
Croatia’s Petra Marcinko also impressed, advancing with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva. After a flawless first set, Marcinko faced stronger resistance in the second, but held her nerve in key moments to close out the match in straight sets and continue her steady rise on the tour.
Germany’s Laura Siegemund delivered a composed performance against Irina-Camelia Begu, winning 6-4, 6-0. After a tight opening set, Siegemund’s experience and tactical variety took control, as she completely neutralised Begu in a one-sided second set.
Poland’s Magda Linette also moved comfortably into the next round, defeating American teenager Robin Montgomery 6-4, 6-3. Linette’s consistency and ability to win the important points proved decisive as she managed both sets with authority despite a competitive challenge.
The biggest shock of the day came from a home perspective, as Spain’s Paula Badosa was eliminated in her opening match by Austria’s Julia Grabher. Expected to mount a strong campaign in Madrid, Badosa instead struggled to find her level and suffered an early and disappointing exit in front of the home crowd.
Day 1 in Madrid underlined the unpredictable nature of the WTA field, where form and composure outweighed ranking and reputation. With several strong performances from rising players and an early exit for a top Spanish star, the tournament has already set an intense tone for the days ahead.
