Botic van de Zandschulp Stuns Daniil Medvedev as Upsets Shake National Bank Open

Botic van de Zandschulp produced one of the biggest victories of his career by defeating fourth seed Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6(5) in the second round of the National Bank Open in Montreal.

The Dutchman delivered an aggressive and composed performance, taking control early before withstanding Medvedev’s second-set comeback to secure a memorable straight-sets win over the former US Open champion.

Van de Zandschulp raced into a 3-0 lead in the second set before Medvedev fought back to force a tie-break. However, the 30-year-old maintained his composure in the decisive moments, taking advantage of several unforced errors from the Russian to complete the upset in one hour and 39 minutes.

The victory marked his first win over Medvedev after four previous defeats and improved his record against Top 10 opponents to 9-25. His reward is a third-round clash with Hubert Hurkacz.

The Dutchman credited his tactical approach for the breakthrough, explaining that he deliberately varied his game and stepped outside his comfort zone after learning from previous meetings with Medvedev. His success also gave him his first Top-10 triumph since defeating Novak Djokovic at Indian Wells last year.

The tournament also witnessed other major surprises. Argentina’s Thiago Agustin Tirante eliminated seventh seed Taylor Fritz 7-5, 6-3, with the American struggling physically during the second set.

Meanwhile, Tallon Griekspoor completed another stunning upset by defeating top seed Alexander Zverev 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-4 to record his third career victory over a Top-5 opponent and continue the wave of shocks in Montreal.
