Botic van de Zandschulp Completes Epic Comeback to Reach US Open Quarter-Finals

Posted : 08 September 2026

Botic van de Zandschulp produced a remarkable comeback from two sets down to defeat Arthur Gea 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 and reach the US Open quarter-finals. The five-hour, 13-minute battle was the fourth-longest match in tournament history.

The 30-year-old Dutchman looked close to elimination after dropping the opening two sets, but he refused to give up and gradually turned the contest around. Gea had a match point during the third set, but van de Zandschulp saved it before forcing the match into a deciding fifth set.

Van de Zandschulp eventually completed the turnaround with a 6-4 fifth set, securing his second US Open quarter-final appearance. His previous run to the last eight at Flushing Meadows came in 2021, when he made the quarter-finals during his breakthrough Grand Slam campaign.

The defeat ended Gea's impressive run in New York. The 21-year-old Frenchman entered the main draw as a lucky loser after losing in qualifying and had been attempting to become the first men's lucky loser to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final. That historic achievement remains out of reach.

The marathon was particularly demanding for both players, with the contest lasting five hours and 13 minutes. It ranked as the longest match of this year's US Open at the time and the fourth-longest in tournament history.

Van de Zandschulp will now face top seed Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals. Zverev advanced after defeating Italy's Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-2, 7-6, setting up their last-eight meeting in New York.

The Dutchman has already shown his ability to produce major upsets at the US Open. In 2024, he stunned then third seed Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets, and he will now look to add another significant victory against Zverev.
