Bosnia and Herzegovina Sweep South Africa 4-0 in Davis Cup Tie

South Africa endured a difficult Davis Cup weekend as Bosnia and Herzegovina completed a 4-0 victory in their World Group II tie at Irene Country Club in Centurion. The visitors sealed the tie after winning the doubles before adding another victory in the final singles rubber.

South Africa entered Sunday needing to win all three matches after dropping both singles contests on the opening day. Philip Henning was brought into the doubles lineup alongside Alec Beckley, replacing Thando Longwe-Smit, but the new pairing could not prevent Bosnia and Herzegovina from taking control.

Mirza Basic and Nerman Fatic proved too strong in the doubles, beating Henning and Beckley 6-4, 6-4. The Bosnian pair adapted well to the quick hardcourt conditions at altitude, securing the victory that gave their team an unassailable 3-0 lead.

The final singles match was then played as a dead rubber, with Longwe-Smit facing Fatic. The Bosnian player completed the clean sweep with a 7-6, 6-1 victory, leaving South Africa without a match win or a set victory across the tie.

Henning felt the final score did not fully reflect how competitive some of the matches had been. He pointed to several crucial points that could have changed the outcome and said the team would use the defeat as motivation ahead of the World Group II playoffs early next year.

South Africa captain Pietie Norval also acknowledged the quality of the opposition. While he felt his players had competed closely during Saturday's singles, he said Bosnia and Herzegovina were too strong in the doubles and ultimately deserved their comprehensive victory.

The result means South Africa will have to regroup for the World Group II playoffs, while Bosnia and Herzegovina secured their route toward the World Group I playoffs.
