Nigeria's rising tennis talent Blessing Otu advanced to the second round of the women's singles at the ongoing 47th Central Bank of Nigeria Senior Tennis Championship. The 18-year-old talent produced an impressive performance to defeat Kelvin Bebe-Emmanuella at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
Otu dominated the early exchanges of the round of 32 encounter to claim the first set comfortably. She eventually sealed a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the Package B Tennis Courts despite a spirited fightback from her left-handed opponent.
Speaking after the match, Otu credited her triumph to tactical discipline and preparation. She stated that she studied her opponent's game plan to exploit her core structural weaknesses. The teenager expressed delight at neutralizing her opponent's tricks in the second set to progress.
The opening day of the main draw brought mixed fortunes for the famous Otu family. John Otu joined his sister in the next round by overcoming Mohammed Abdusalam in a grueling three-set match. He won 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 to book his spot in the men's singles round of 32.
However, former champion Thomas Otu could not replicate his siblings' success on the Abuja hard courts. The 14th seed suffered a disappointing first-round exit after losing 6-0, 7-5 to Danjuma Isaac.
In other men's singles fixtures, third seed Michael Emmanuel advanced after securing a victory over Ibrahim Aminu. Drimiya Mevi also staged an impressive comeback after dropping the opening frame to eliminate Seyi Ogunsakin 6-7, 6-3, 6-1.
Furthermore, tournament veteran Michael Chima relied on his extensive experience to edge out Matthew Abamu 7-5, 7-6 in a close contest. Sylvanus Agang also cruised into the next round with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory over Egena Peter.
Main draw action will intensify as the remaining top-ranked national players enter the competition. Men's singles top seed Abua Cannice is scheduled to begin his highly anticipated campaign for a maiden national crown against qualifier Ureyang.
