Ben Shelton Stuns Carlos Alcaraz in Historic US Open Quarter-Final Thriller

Ben Shelton produced the biggest victory of his career by defeating defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a dramatic five-set US Open quarter-final that finished in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The American eighth seed prevailed 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) after four hours and 28 minutes of intense action at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The match began shortly after 11pm following delays to the earlier schedule and ended at 3:33am, setting a new record for the latest finish in tournament history.

Shelton held his nerve in a gripping deciding-set tie-break to secure his first victory over Alcaraz in four meetings. The result also ended the Spaniard's title defence and marked Shelton's first win over a top-three opponent after 17 previous attempts.

The 23-year-old American was backed by a passionate home crowd throughout the marathon encounter and will now face fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the semi-finals. Their meeting guarantees that an American man will reach the US Open final, strengthening hopes of a first home men's singles champion in New York since Andy Roddick in 2003.

Shelton recovered impressively after losing the opening set in a tie-break. He seized control of the next two sets before Alcaraz responded in the fourth, forcing the contest into a decider.

Alcaraz, competing in his first tournament after more than four months away because of a wrist injury, showed remarkable resilience to remain in contention. Despite signs of physical fatigue, he pushed Shelton all the way before the American prevailed in the final 10-point tie-break.

Shelton described the encounter as an epic battle and one of the most enjoyable matches of his career. His victory gives him a second US Open semi-final appearance and a major opportunity to continue America's resurgence on home soil.
