Ben Shelton Ends João Fonseca’s Run to Reach National Bank Open Quarterfinals

Posted : 10 August 2026

Defending champion Ben Shelton continued his impressive run at the National Bank Open in Montreal by defeating 19-year-old João Fonseca 6-3, 7-6(3) on Sunday. The American secured his place in the quarterfinals and will next face Jakub Mensik.

Both Shelton and Fonseca had reached the fourth round without losing a set, but it was the defending champion who maintained that record. Despite facing difficult windy conditions and falling behind by an early break in both sets, Shelton remained composed and battled his way back into the contest.

The 23-year-old needed one hour and 48 minutes to complete the victory, overcoming Fonseca's powerful game with greater consistency at key moments. The Brazilian teenager had entered the clash on a strong run after defeating Casper Ruud in the previous round.

Shelton acknowledged the challenging conditions after the match, saying the windy weather made it difficult for both players to find their rhythm. He credited his determination for helping him overcome a high-quality opponent and secure another victory in his title defence.

The American will now meet Mensik in the last eight after the Czech player defeated Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 7-5.
