Ben Shelton Eager to Challenge Carlos Alcaraz in US Open Quarterfinal

Posted : 07 September 2026

Ben Shelton believes Carlos Alcaraz is producing some of his best tennis as the defending champion prepares to face the American in the US Open quarterfinals. Shelton, however, is confident in his own progress and is relishing the opportunity to test himself against the seven-time Grand Slam champion in New York.

Alcaraz has looked increasingly impressive since returning to competition following a lengthy absence caused by a right wrist injury. The Spaniard defeated Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth round, extending his Grand Slam winning streak to 18 matches and reaching the US Open quarterfinals for the fifth time in six appearances.

Shelton booked his place in the last eight with an emphatic straight-sets victory over eighth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. The American controlled the match with powerful serving and consistent play, setting up another meeting with Alcaraz after losing their previous three encounters.

Despite that head-to-head disadvantage, Shelton believes he is a significantly better player than when he last faced Alcaraz at Roland Garros in 2025. He feels his serve, return game, baseline consistency and movement have all improved, giving him greater confidence heading into their first meeting at the US Open.

Alcaraz has also identified his return strategy as an important weapon. The Spaniard has been changing his position behind the baseline when receiving serve, hoping to create uncertainty for opponents and put additional pressure on their service games.

The quarterfinal is one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament, with Alcaraz returning after a four-and-a-half-month injury absence and Shelton enjoying a strong run in front of his home crowd. The American will also have the support of the New York fans as he attempts to reach his first US Open semifinal.
