Ben Shelton Defends Canadian Open Title in Montreal

Ben Shelton successfully defended his National Bank Open title on Thursday, defeating fellow American Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 7-6(4) in an all-American final in Montreal. The victory gave the 23-year-old his second Masters 1000 championship and seventh ATP title, while extending his perfect record against Nakashima to 6-0.

Shelton controlled the opening set with aggressive tennis and converted his opportunities to take an early advantage. The second set was considerably tighter, but the defending champion remained composed in the decisive tiebreak to complete the victory without dropping a set throughout the tournament.

By winning in Canada for a second consecutive year, Shelton became only the fourth man this century to successfully defend the Canadian Open title, joining Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. His triumph also came in the first all-American Masters 1000 final since 2003.

The result marks a significant turnaround for Shelton, who had struggled for consistency at Masters 1000 events earlier in the season. He now heads to Cincinnati with a 12-match winning streak in Canada and renewed momentum ahead of the US Open.:
