American tennis star Ben Shelton has strengthened his coaching team by appointing former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero ahead of the 2027 season.
The 24-year-old confirmed the move on Sunday, welcoming the Spaniard to his team after an impressive 2026 campaign that saw him reach a career-high fourth in the world rankings and collect four ATP titles.
Shelton also enjoyed a major breakthrough at the US Open in September, reaching his first Grand Slam final. He defeated Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling five-set quarter-final before eventually losing to Alexander Zverev in the championship match.
Ferrero brings considerable experience to the American's coaching setup. The former French Open champion and world number one previously worked with Alcaraz, helping the Spaniard secure his first six Grand Slam titles before their partnership ended in December 2025.
His arrival will not mean the departure of Shelton's father, Bryan, who has played a central role in developing his son's career. Instead, Ferrero will work alongside Bryan and the existing coaching team as Shelton looks to improve his performances on the biggest stages.
Ferrero expressed his excitement about the new partnership, praising Shelton's natural ability, powerful game and personality. He also welcomed the opportunity to combine his experience with the work already being done by the American's team.
Shelton described Ferrero as one of tennis's most knowledgeable figures, highlighting his experience as both an elite player and a coach who has helped develop Grand Slam champions.
The American believes the Spaniard's expertise will provide valuable support as he continues his pursuit of major titles.
The appointment represents another important step in Shelton's development. Having established himself among the world's leading players, he will now look to turn his recent progress into consistent success at Grand Slam tournaments.
Ferrero, meanwhile, returns to the ATP Tour coaching scene with another highly ranked player after his successful spell working with Alcaraz. Their new partnership will officially begin ahead of the 2027 campaign.
