American second seed Ben Shelton booked his place in the quarterfinals of the ATP Munich event on Wednesday after defeating Belgian wildcard Alexander Blockx 6-4, 7-6 (10/8). The world No. 6 was pushed hard by the 21-year-old, who is ranked 72nd, especially in a tense second-set tiebreak, but Shelton held firm to close out the match in just over one hour and 45 minutes.
Shelton delivered a strong serving performance, firing four aces and successfully saving all three break points he faced. The victory sets up a last-eight meeting with rising Brazilian talent Joao Fonseca.
The American is still in search of his first clay-court title. Last year, he came close in Munich but finished runner-up to Germany’s Alexander Zverev. Zverev, the top seed and a three-time champion at the event, continues his campaign on home soil and is set to face Canada’s Gabriel Diallo in the round of 16.
Fonseca also impressed earlier in the day, eliminating seventh seed Arthur Rinderknech of France with a commanding 6-3, 6-2 win. The 19-year-old Brazilian has now beaten Rinderknech twice this month, having also defeated him at Monte Carlo earlier in April.
In other action, fourth seed Flavio Cobolli advanced comfortably with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Zizou Bergs. He will next face Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva, who pulled off a comeback win against Luciano Darderi, recovering from a set down to triumph 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
As the tournament progresses, several emerging names continue to challenge higher-ranked seeds, setting up an intriguing finish in Munich.
