Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic booked her place in the Pan Pacific Open final on Saturday, a decade after her first appearance, following a battling 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-2 victory over American Sofia Kenin. She will face Czech player Linda Noskova, who advanced to the final via walkover after Elena Rybakina withdrew with a back injury.
Playing under the closed roof of the Ariake Coliseum due to rain, Bencic and Kenin held serve consistently throughout the opening set. The Swiss player edged a tense tiebreak with a decisive forehand winner to take control. Kenin, however, fought back in the second set, breaking early and holding firm to level the match.
Bencic, the reigning Tokyo Olympics champion, regained her composure in the final set, breaking Kenin for a 3-1 lead after a series of unforced errors from the American. The 28-year-old maintained her momentum to close out the match and secure her spot in the championship round, where she will compete for her second title of the season.
Noskova advanced automatically after Rybakina, who had already qualified for next month’s WTA Finals in Riyadh, pulled out with a back injury. The Kazakh star expressed her disappointment at being unable to compete, saying she hoped to return stronger next year.
For Noskova, the Tokyo final marks another chance to lift her second WTA trophy, following her maiden win in Monterrey last year.
