Barbora Krejcikova Ends Title Drought with Athens Open Triumph Over Maria Sakkari

Barbora Krejcikova captured her first WTA title of the season after defeating hometown favourite Maria Sakkari 7-6(5), 6-3 in the final of the hard-court tournament in Athens on Sunday.

The Czech star, a two-time Grand Slam champion, produced a resilient display during the one-hour, 45-minute contest to secure the ninth singles title of her career. The victory also marked her first tournament triumph since lifting the Wimbledon crown two years ago.

Krejcikova showed remarkable determination in the opening set, recovering from a 4-1 deficit before forcing a tie-break, which she eventually won to take control of the match.

Sakkari made another strong start in the second set by earning an early break, but Krejcikova responded with an impressive comeback. The world No. 32 maintained her momentum to close out the match in straight sets and complete a memorable victory.

For Sakkari, the defeat extended her wait for a third WTA singles title to nearly three years. The former world No. 3 had hoped to celebrate a fairytale victory in front of her home fans after reaching the final of the tournament, which returned to Athens this year following a 35-year absence.

The occasion carried extra significance for the Greek star, whose mother had also competed in the championship match of the same event during its previous era, adding a special family connection to the tournament.
