Sebastian Baez staged a strong comeback to secure a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over fellow Argentine Camilo Ugo Carabelli in the semifinals of the Rio Open. After losing the opening set, the defending champion found his rhythm and dominated the rest of the match, winning 12 of the next 14 games.
Baez, aiming to become the tournament’s first two-time champion, will now face Alexandre Muller in the final after the Frenchman battled past Francisco Comesana in a grueling contest.
Carabelli, a lucky loser in the draw, made an impressive start but struggled to maintain his momentum as Baez tightened his game. The fifth seed dropped just four service points across the final two sets, showcasing his dominance on clay.
Reflecting on his performance, Baez expressed pride in overcoming recent struggles, acknowledging that he had not felt at his best throughout the week. He also praised Carabelli’s effort, recognizing their long-standing familiarity on the court since childhood.
In the other semifinal, Muller endured a marathon encounter against Comesana, eventually prevailing 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-3 after nearly three hours.
Comesana had stunned world No. 2 Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals but was unable to continue his dream run against the determined Frenchman. Muller, who lifted his first career title at the Hong Kong Open last month, now has the chance to claim his maiden ATP 500 title.
The 28-year-old has enjoyed an impressive tournament, securing key wins over Brazilian teenage sensation Joao Fonseca and top-ranked Argentine Francisco Cerundolo. If victorious, he would become the first French player to win the Rio Open, capping off a remarkable campaign in Brazil. With Baez aiming to defend his crown and Muller seeking a historic triumph, the final promises an intense battle for the championship.
