Paula Badosa delivered an emotional performance to defeat world No. 3 Coco Gauff 7-5, 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, shattering the American's hopes of claiming her first title in Melbourne. The victory saw Badosa reach her first-ever Grand Slam semi-final, becoming the first Spanish woman to achieve this since Garbine Muguruza's 2020 run in Melbourne. Reflecting on the win, an emotional Badosa expressed pride in her performance and the level of tennis she showcased.
Badosa's journey to the semi-finals is particularly remarkable considering her comeback from a serious back injury that had left her outside the top 100 a year ago. "A year ago, I was here with my back that I didn’t know if I had to retire from this sport, and now I’m here playing against the best in the world," Badosa shared. Her victory marks an incredible turn of events, as she had never imagined being in this position just 12 months ago.
Gauff, who had been undefeated in 2025 until this point, struggled throughout the match, unable to create break points in the first set and committing numerous unforced errors. Badosa seized the opportunity early, breaking Gauff's serve at 5-5 in the opening set to clinch it after 56 minutes. Gauff’s inability to maintain consistency allowed Badosa to take control, and the Spaniard capitalized on her opponent's mistakes.
The second set saw Badosa continue her relentless play, saving four break points in a marathon opening game before breaking Gauff’s serve once again. Despite Gauff's attempts to fight back, including a break to level at 2-2, Badosa responded with two more breaks to seal the victory in 1 hour and 43 minutes. Her triumph marked her first-ever Grand Slam win over a top-10 player, leaving her with a chance to reach the final, where she will face either Aryna Sabalenka or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
