Australian Open 1 Point Slam Returns in 2027 With Alcaraz, Sinner, Gauff and Osaka

Posted : 08 October 2026

The Australian Open’s one-point knockout event will return in 2027, with Alcaraz, Sinner, Gauff and Osaka among the confirmed stars.

The Australian Open will bring back its unique 1 Point Slam in 2027, with some of tennis’s biggest names set to compete in the unusual winner-takes-all contest.

Defending Australian Open champion Carlos Alcaraz, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka have all committed to the event, which will again combine leading professionals with amateur players.

The format is unlike a traditional tennis tournament. Each match is decided by a single point, meaning players advance with a win and are immediately eliminated if they lose. The serving player is determined through a game of rock, paper, scissors.

The concept attracted significant attention during its 2026 edition when amateur Jordan Smith produced a remarkable run to win the A$1 million prize. Smith defeated several established players, including Sinner, before completing his unexpected triumph.

Tennis Australia Chief Tennis Officer Tom Larner said the event provides recreational players with a rare opportunity to compete alongside some of the sport’s biggest stars. The competition is designed to connect grassroots tennis with the Grand Slam stage.

The amateur participants for 2027 will again come through competitions held across Australia. Eight state and territory championship winners will earn places, while another eight players will qualify through additional routes.

The 2027 1 Point Slam final is scheduled for January 13 at Rod Laver Arena, ahead of the Australian Open main draw, which will run from January 17 to 31. The champion will also receive a specially crafted Australian silver trophy.

More than 1.3 million spectators attended the 2026 Australian Open, and organisers are planning further increases to seating and viewing capacity for next year’s tournament.
