Aryna Sabalenka Wins on Wimbledon Return as Ons Jabeur Retires in Heat

Posted : 30 June 2025

World number one Aryna Sabalenka made a winning return to Wimbledon with a straight-sets victory in her first-round match, while two-time finalist Ons Jabeur was forced to retire due to physical difficulties amid soaring temperatures in London. Sabalenka, who missed last year’s tournament with a shoulder injury, defeated Canadian qualifier Carson Branstine 6-1, 7-5 on Court One, battling through a more competitive second set as the temperature climbed to 30°C.

Before the match, Sabalenka admitted to knowing little about her opponent aside from Branstine’s modeling career. However, the world number 194 quickly made her presence felt with a powerful serve that challenged Sabalenka, particularly in the second set.

Ultimately, Sabalenka broke serve in the 11th game and closed out the match to avoid a third set in the punishing heat. Expressing her joy at being back, she said, "I'm super happy to be back, to be healthy and to compete at this beautiful tournament."

In contrast, Ons Jabeur’s campaign came to a premature end. The Tunisian, who has dealt with ongoing injuries and slipped to 59th in the rankings, struggled visibly in the intense conditions. During her match against Viktoriya Tomova, she required a 14-minute medical timeout in the first set and appeared distressed on the court.

Despite efforts to continue, she retired while trailing 7-6 (7-5), 2-0. Jabeur later reflected on her disappointment, saying she hadn’t expected to feel unwell, especially after good practice sessions in the days leading up to the match.

Jabeur’s early exit adds to a difficult season marked by fitness challenges. She noted her intention to rest, reset, and spend time with family to recover. The hot weather, which played a key role in the day's outcomes, is expected to intensify, with forecasts suggesting temperatures could reach 33°C—approaching record highs for Wimbledon’s opening days.
