Aryna Sabalenka Shows Room for Growth Despite Brisbane International Win

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka recorded her second commanding victory at the Brisbane International on Thursday, yet the Belarusian star admitted she still sees room for improvement in her game.

Sabalenka faced occasional resistance from 36-year-old Sorana Cirstea but ultimately controlled the match, defeating the Romanian 6-3, 6-3 in just 70 minutes. Her next opponent will be either 21-year-old Russian Diana Shnaider or American Madison Keys, who famously beat Sabalenka in last year’s Australian Open final.

Reflecting on her performance, Sabalenka emphasized her ongoing focus on improvement as she eyes a third Australian Open title in four years, with the tournament set to begin in Melbourne on 18 January. “I think there is always room to improve, and I’m definitely not at my peak,” she said. “Of course, everyone prefers to win 6-0, 6-0, but you only get better when you are challenged and have to handle pressure moments.”

Sabalenka praised tournaments like Brisbane, which feature seven of the top ten women in the world, for providing ideal preparation for a Grand Slam. “Having top players in the draw definitely helps to prepare for the Australian Open,” she said. “It’s important to have quality matches beforehand to get mentally ready for battles, and playing against top competitors is a huge advantage.”

Meanwhile, former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina also advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating Spain’s Paula Badosa 6-3, 6-2. The world No. 5 broke control at 3-3 in the first set, winning nine of the following eleven games to secure her win. “It’s always tough against Paula—she has great shots, plays fast, and has a strong serve,” said Rybakina. “I have areas to work on for my next match, but hopefully I’ll play even better.”
