Aryna Sabalenka Targets First WTA Finals Crown in Riyadh

Posted : 31 October 2025

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka is determined to end her outstanding 2025 campaign on a high by winning her first WTA Finals title in Riyadh, where the season-ending tournament begins on Saturday, November 1. The Belarusian heads a world-class field featuring all four of this year’s Grand Slam champions.

Sabalenka has been the model of consistency throughout the season. The 27-year-old successfully defended her US Open crown in September, reached the Australian Open and Roland Garros finals, and was only denied a clean sweep of major finals when Iga Swiatek defeated Amanda Anisimova in the Wimbledon decider.

Iga Swiatek, currently ranked world No. 2, will also look to end her season on a strong note after an eventful year. The Polish star rebounded from missing a fourth straight French Open title to claim her first Wimbledon trophy, as well as hard-court victories in Cincinnati and Seoul.

Defending champion Coco Gauff returns as one of the top contenders, having rediscovered her form with a title in Wuhan and a semifinal run in Beijing after a mid-season dip following her Roland Garros triumph.

Meanwhile, Amanda Anisimova makes her WTA Finals debut, eager to compensate for her near-misses in the Wimbledon and US Open finals. Tennis analyst Tracy Austin believes Anisimova’s current form could make her dangerous in Riyadh:

Madison Keys, who beat Sabalenka to capture the Australian Open title earlier this year, is another major threat on hard courts. Other participants include Jessica Pegula, Elena Rybakina, and Jasmine Paolini, all in the hunt for a share of the tournament’s $15.5 million prize pool.

While the year-end world No. 1 ranking is already secured by Sabalenka, the competition for the season finale title promises intensity and intrigue. The event will also showcase the top eight doubles teams in the world.
