Aryna Sabalenka Overcomes Linda Noskova to Reach Sixth Straight US Open Semifinal

Two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka survived a major scare from Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova on Tuesday, fighting back to secure a place in the US Open semifinals for the sixth consecutive year.

The world No. 1 prevailed 7-6 (7/1), 3-6, 7-6 (10/7) in a fiercely contested quarterfinal on Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 21-year-old Noskova pushed Sabalenka throughout the two-hour, 22-minute battle, but the defending champion held her nerve when it mattered most.

Sabalenka found herself in serious trouble in the final set after falling 4-2 behind. She responded by immediately raising her level, breaking Noskova without dropping a point to draw level at 4-4 before forcing the match into a decisive 10-point tiebreak.

The Belarusian then recovered from an early 0-2 deficit in the tiebreak and eventually sealed the victory with a bold second-serve ace. The result extended her US Open winning streak to 18 matches and kept her bid for a third consecutive title firmly alive.

Noskova produced an impressive performance despite the defeat, firing 18 aces and becoming the first player to take a set from Sabalenka at this year's tournament. She also reached the US Open quarterfinals for the first time after winning her maiden Grand Slam title at Wimbledon earlier this season.

Sabalenka will now face Jessica Pegula in the semifinals. Pegula defeated fellow American Emma Navarro 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to set up a rematch of the 2024 US Open final, which Sabalenka won. The Belarusian also defeated Pegula in last year's semifinals.

The victory was particularly important for Sabalenka's hopes of remaining world No. 1. Elena Rybakina can move to the top of the rankings if she defeats Zheng Qinwen, meaning Sabalenka needs to continue her title defense to have a chance of keeping the position.

Sabalenka is also seeking a return to her best form after a difficult stretch at the other Grand Slam tournaments this year. Her run in New York has now put her two victories away from becoming the first woman since Serena Williams to win three consecutive US Open titles.
