Aryna Sabalenka Dominates French Open Opener

Posted : 25 May 2025

World number one Aryna Sabalenka started her French Open campaign with a commanding performance, dropping just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kamilla Rakhimova. The Belarusian star dominated the match in just one hour, serving five aces, hitting 30 winners, and breaking her opponent’s serve five times.

Sabalenka’s impressive display on Court Philippe Chatrier under the roof showcased her status as a top contender, as she won nine consecutive games to close out the match with ease.

Despite never having reached the French Open final, Sabalenka is proving why she is one of the tournament favorites. The 27-year-old three-time Grand Slam winner could face Chinese eighth seed Zheng Qinwen in the quarter-finals and defending champion Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals if she continues her strong form.

Before reaching those stages, Sabalenka will meet Jil Teichmann, who also advanced after defeating Lucrezia Stefanini, in the third round.

After her win, Sabalenka shared a personal ritual with fans, taking pictures of her bags and the court with a Polaroid camera—a tradition she started last December to capture positive memories and good vibes.

Meanwhile, other highlights from day one included Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko advancing on her Grand Slam debut and former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova losing in her comeback match. Ukrainian Elina Svitolina and Russian Diana Shnaider also moved smoothly into the second round, maintaining strong performances early in the tournament.
