World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka successfully defended her US Open crown on Saturday, defeating Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in the final at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The victory handed the Belarusian her fourth Grand Slam trophy and second consecutive title in New York.
Sabalenka entered the final under pressure after falling short in both the Australian and French Open finals earlier in the year. This time, she delivered a composed and aggressive performance, overcoming Anisimova’s early surge to seal the win in one hour and 34 minutes.
The 27-year-old was relentless on return, exploiting Anisimova’s inconsistent serve and converting five of her six break point opportunities. After losing an early lead, Sabalenka steadied herself, breaking twice in succession to take control of the first set. In the second, she appeared set to close it out at 5-4, only for Anisimova to break back and push the contest into a tiebreak. But Sabalenka’s superior nerve in crucial moments carried her over the line, extending her remarkable streak to 19 straight tiebreak wins.
The American, competing in her second Grand Slam final after Wimbledon, admitted she struggled to handle the occasion. Anisimova had her chances, particularly after fighting back from an early deficit in both sets, but she was unable to sustain her level against the world’s top-ranked player.
Speaking after the match, Anisimova said nerves once again played a part: “I didn’t fight hard enough for my dreams today. I just felt like I wasn’t playing my best tennis.” Despite the disappointment, the 24-year-old expressed hope of learning from the experience and returning stronger.
For Sabalenka, the triumph adds to a growing collection of major titles — the US Open (2024, 2025) and the Australian Open (2023, 2024). With 21 career titles and more than $42 million in prize money, she further cements her place at the pinnacle of women’s tennis.
