Aryna Sabalenka moved confidently through her second-round match at the Brisbane International on Tuesday, dispatching Cristina Bucsa 6-0, 6-1 in just 48 minutes.
The world No. 1 displayed her trademark power and precision, racing through the first set in 22 minutes and taking only 26 minutes to seal the second. The commanding win over the world No. 50 sends a strong message to her rivals ahead of the Australian Open, which begins on January 18.
Sabalenka credited her December 28 exhibition match against Nick Kyrgios in Dubai for preparing her physically and mentally for the season. “When you play against a guy, the intensity is completely different,” she said.
“Especially with Nick, who drop-shots every other shot, so you move a lot. That exhibition was fun and a great challenge. It really got my fitness up for today’s match.” She added that the event also helped attract attention to tennis: “It wasn’t about proving something to anyone, but it showed that tennis can be really huge.”
Looking ahead, Sabalenka will face either Jelena Ostapenko or Sorana Cirstea in the third round, keeping her on course for a potential quarterfinal showdown with Madison Keys—a rematch of last year’s Australian Open final won by the American. Keys herself advanced to the third round after defeating fellow American McCartney Kessler 6-4, 6-3, admitting it took her a bit of time to find her rhythm.
In the men’s draw, two significant upsets shook the tournament. Second-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina lost to American Brandon Nakashima 7-6 (7/4), 6-4, while fifth-seeded Canadian Denis Shapovalov was defeated by Belgian qualifier Raphael Collignon 6-4, 6-2.
