Arthur Fils Withdraws from Roland Garros with Stress Fracture in Back

Posted : 01 June 2025

Arthur Fils, France’s top-ranked player, withdrew from Roland Garros before his scheduled third-round match, citing a stress fracture in his lower back. The 20-year-old, seeded 14th, pulled out on Friday ahead of his clash with Russia’s Andrey Rublev.

Rublev advanced to the last 16 by walkover and could face world No. 1 Jannik Sinner next. Fils revealed that after struggling through a five-set match against Jaume Munar, during which his back pain worsened, scans confirmed the injury, prompting the difficult decision to stop playing.

Fils explained that the back issue had been troubling him for some time and intensified during the match against Munar, where he also battled cramping. He acknowledged that the support from the home crowd on Court Suzanne Lenglen helped him finish that tough contest, but pushing through could have led to a longer recovery period. With the injury likely sidelining him for four to six weeks, Fils and his team chose to prioritize his health to avoid a prolonged absence from the sport.

Despite the setback, Fils remains hopeful about competing at Wimbledon later this year, where he previously reached the last 16. However, he admitted uncertainty about his recovery timeline. This withdrawal adds to a challenging season for the young Parisian, who was also forced to retire from the Australian Open earlier this year due to an ankle injury. His absence prolongs France’s wait for a male Roland Garros champion since Yannick Noah’s historic win in 1983.
