Arthur Fils has withdrawn from Roland Garros just before the start of the tournament, citing ongoing pain from an injury that has troubled him in recent weeks. The 21-year-old French No.1 was due to face veteran Stan Wawrinka in the opening round but opted to pull out after assessing his physical condition.
Speaking at a press conference in Paris, Fils admitted he was not fit enough to compete at the level required for a Grand Slam. He explained that while he had considered pushing through, he was far from full fitness and felt it would be too risky to continue.
The world No.19 also revealed uncertainty over the exact nature of his injury, describing discomfort in his lower body that could involve the hip or surrounding muscles. He added that attempting to compete at such a high intensity could worsen the problem.
Fils has struggled with recurring injury setbacks over the past year, also withdrawing from several major tournaments, including Wimbledon and the US Open in 2025. He said his focus now shifts to recovery and preparing for the grass-court season ahead of Wimbledon.
Dutch player Jesper de Jong, ranked 109th in the world, has been given a lucky loser entry and will replace Fils in the main draw.
