Arthur Fery Eyes Improvement After Musetti Ends US Open Debut

Britain’s Arthur Fery says he has identified areas to improve after Lorenzo Musetti ended his US Open campaign with a straight-sets victory in New York.

The 24-year-old British No. 1 was beaten 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 by the Italian 13th seed in his first appearance at Flushing Meadows. The defeat came shortly after Fery reached his first ATP Tour final in Winston-Salem and followed his impressive run to the Wimbledon semi-finals.

Fery had climbed to a career-high ranking of No. 33 following his breakthrough performances this summer, narrowly missing out on a seeded position at the US Open. He faced a particularly difficult opening-round assignment against Musetti, a former world No. 5 and two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist.

Musetti took control after Fery struggled with his serve, including two consecutive double faults that helped the Italian secure the decisive break in the opening set. His one-handed backhand and consistency from the baseline continued to cause problems in the second set.

Fery briefly threatened a comeback after breaking at the start of the third set, but Musetti responded immediately and regained control. The Briton levelled at 5-5 after saving a match point, only for Musetti to break again and close out the match.

Despite the loss, Fery believes the experience will help him identify what is required to compete more consistently against established players. He acknowledged that his serve was below its usual standard and that the margins are extremely small when facing opponents at Musetti's level.

Fery can nevertheless take confidence from a remarkable period that has seen him become Britain's No. 1, reach the Wimbledon semi-finals and make his first ATP final in Winston-Salem.
