Amanda Anisimova recovered from a set down to defeat Naomi Osaka and secure a spot in the US Open final, while defending champion Aryna Sabalenka advances to defend her title. On the doubles side, British duo Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski aim to make history in the men’s competition.
Anisimova Overcomes Osaka to Reach US Open Final
In a gripping three-hour contest, Amanda Anisimova came back from losing the opening set to beat two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. The victory sets up an exciting final against world number one and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka.
The American, seeded eighth, had suffered a crushing 6-0 6-0 defeat to Iga Swiatek in her first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon in July. Just 54 days later, she bounced back with a semi-final win over Swiatek before overcoming Osaka. Falling to her knees in celebration shortly before 1 a.m. local time, Anisimova said, “It means the world. The hope is to be the champion, but I’m in the final now and I’m excited.”
Sabalenka Eyes Fourth Grand Slam Title
Aryna Sabalenka, 27, will defend her US Open crown against Anisimova on Saturday. She reached the final after a resilient comeback, defeating Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Sabalenka, who has also won the Australian Open in 2023 and 2024, expressed interest in participating in a ‘Battle of the Sexes’-style match against former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios, though no date or venue has been confirmed.
“Like he said in an interview, I genuinely think I’m going to win. I’ll definitely go out there and try my best,” Sabalenka said. Kyrgios, who is ranked 651st in the world, has only played five matches this year after returning from a serious wrist injury that sidelined him for 18 months. Historically, three official ‘Battle of the Sexes’ matches have taken place, including Billie Jean King’s famous 1973 win over Bobby Riggs.
Salisbury and Skupski Target Historic All-British US Open Victory
In men’s doubles, Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski will attempt to become the first all-British pair to win the US Open since 1903. The sixth-seeded team recovered from a set and a break down to defeat their opponents 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, securing their place in Saturday’s final.
Their opponents, Spain’s Marcel Granollers and Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos, won their semi-final 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 over Americans Robert Cash and JJ Tracy. Salisbury and Skupski have both reached US Open finals individually, but this is their first major final together. “It’d be great to put our names in the history books as an all-British pairing,” Salisbury said. Their victory would follow fellow Britons Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool, who claimed the Wimbledon doubles title earlier this year.
