Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic have ended their coaching partnership after just six months, a decision described as mutual. The timing means Murray won’t be part of Djokovic’s team as the 24-time Grand Slam winner gears up for a potential eighth Wimbledon title in July.
Their collaboration, which began in November, showed promise early on, with Djokovic reaching the Australian Open semi-finals before withdrawing due to injury. Despite a strong start, the pairing came to a close after only four tournaments together.
Djokovic has struggled to maintain his usual form this season, exiting in the first round of four out of his last five tournaments and losing the Miami Open final to teenage talent Jakub Mensik. Still, Djokovic expressed gratitude for Murray’s role during this period, thanking him for his support and friendship. Murray, in turn, appreciated the opportunity, acknowledging Djokovic’s team and wishing the Serbian success for the remainder of the season.
The partnership saw its final appearance in Miami, where Djokovic advanced to the final without dropping a set before falling in two tight tie-breaks. As part of his clay-court campaign, Djokovic will enter the Geneva Open via wildcard after a winless run on clay so far, including a first-round loss in Monte Carlo and his unexplained absence from the Italian Open.
Although their coaching relationship was initially open-ended, it ultimately concluded earlier than expected, leaving behind a mix of professional respect and personal camaraderie.
Djokovic was notably impressed with Murray’s coaching instincts, praising his analytical mind and timing during conversations. He noted that while it was initially odd to share personal reflections with a former rival, the dynamic quickly became rewarding.
Murray admitted he sometimes felt awkward receiving attention while coaching, given the long-standing contributions of Djokovic’s team. Nevertheless, the experience marked a rare and meaningful collaboration between two former competitors turned allies, albeit briefly.
