Andrey Rublev wins appeal over disqualification penalties at Dubai Tennis championships

Posted : 04 March 2024

Andrey Rublev has successfully appealed against the loss of ranking points and prize money stemming from his disqualification at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

The Russian player was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct during his semi-final against Alexander Bublik when he vehemently confronted a line judge following a disputed call in the third set.

A Russian-speaking official informed ATP supervisor Roland Herfel that Rublev had used offensive language directed at the line judge in Russian.

The ATP announced that the appeals committee deemed the customary penalties associated with a default, including the loss of ranking points and prize money for the entire tournament, as disproportionate in this particular case.

Despite winning the appeal, Rublev's fine of $36,400 (£28,700) for the code violation remains unchanged. The decision to overturn the more severe penalties reflects a nuanced evaluation of the circumstances surrounding Rublev's disqualification.

The incident allowed Russian-born Kazakh player Alexander Bublik to advance, receiving the win at 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-5) 6-5. Bublik, who had earlier received a code violation for smashing his racquet during the match, proceeded to the final but was ultimately defeated by France's Ugo Humbert.
