Andreeva Steals the Show as Sabalenka Survives Scare, Alcaraz Storms into Wimbledon Semis

Posted : 09 July 2025

In a lighter moment at Wimbledon, world number six Mirra Andreeva delighted fans by playfully switching roles with her coach, Conchita Martinez. True to her pre-match promise, Andreeva showed up on Court 16 as Martinez competed in the invitational doubles event alongside Greg Rusedski. The 18-year-old donned a hat decorated with tennis-themed pins and held up a homemade sign that read, "Let's go senorita!" and "You are golden," while shouting words of encouragement like, "You’d better win this game!"

Their partnership, which began last season, has seen Andreeva rise swiftly in the rankings and reach her first Wimbledon quarter-final. Their bond is filled with mutual respect and humor, with Martinez describing Andreeva as someone who brings out her playful side. Andreeva will face Switzerland's Belinda Bencic in the last eight on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, on Centre Court, world number one Aryna Sabalenka had to dig deep to avoid an upset against Germany’s Laura Siegemund. In a match that lasted nearly three hours, Sabalenka clawed her way to a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory. Twice coming back from a break down in the final set, the Belarusian used her resilience to overcome the unseeded but tricky Siegemund, who kept her on the defensive with clever slices and slow-paced rallies.

Sabalenka admitted that she felt close to defeat after the first set, even thinking about leaving the tournament. However, she credited lessons from her recent French Open final loss for helping her stay composed and ultimately prevail. She will now face American Amanda Anisimova, who defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 7-6 (11-9), for a place in her first Wimbledon final.

Over on Court 1, two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz showcased his dominance with a clinical 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 win over Britain’s Cameron Norrie. The Spanish second seed, now on a 23-match winning streak, confirmed his semi-final spot in just one hour and 39 minutes. He will next face fifth seed Taylor Fritz, who battled past Karen Khachanov in four sets.

Alcaraz’s powerful serve, pinpoint groundstrokes, and swift movement left Norrie with little room to fight back. The Brit acknowledged the Spaniard's excellence, saying, “His level was unreal.” Despite the defeat, Norrie can take heart from his strong showing after a challenging season and is expected to return to the ATP top 50 next week.

As the tournament heads toward its climax, Wimbledon 2025 continues to deliver on drama, delight, and dazzling tennis.
