Andreeva Holds Nerve to Reach Madrid Open Final Against Kostyuk

Posted : 01 May 2026

Mirra Andreeva produced a composed performance under pressure to defeat Hailey Baptiste 6-4, 7-6(8) and book her place in the final of the Madrid Open. The teenager showed resilience in a tightly contested match, especially during a tense second-set tiebreak.

Fresh from celebrating her 19th birthday, Andreeva controlled much of the opening set with strong serving, conceding very few points on her delivery. She secured the decisive break in the seventh game with a precise backhand winner, taking advantage of Baptiste’s early struggles and unforced errors.

The second set proved more dramatic, with Baptiste—who had stunned Aryna Sabalenka in the previous round—raising her level. After falling behind, she saved a match point and broke back late to force a tiebreak, pushing Andreeva to the limit in a battle of nerves.

However, Andreeva regained composure at the crucial moments, saving multiple set points before eventually sealing victory when Baptiste sent a return long. The win marks her third appearance in a WTA 1000 final, underlining her rapid rise on the tour.

In the other semi-final, Marta Kostyuk advanced after overcoming Anastasia Potapova in a fluctuating three-set contest. Kostyuk dominated the opening set, lost momentum in the second, but regained control in the decider to secure her place in the final.

Kostyuk will now face Andreeva in what promises to be a compelling showdown, with the Ukrainian aiming to repeat her earlier victory over the young Russian from their previous meeting this season.
